Ceramic coating: what to know before you buy one

Ceramic coating can make paint easier to maintain, but it is not scratch-proof. Here is what the service is actually for.

Ceramic coating is easiest to understand when you separate two jobs that often get sold together: improving the paint and protecting the paint.

Paint correction is the polishing step that reduces visible swirls, haze and defects in the clear coat. Ceramic coating is the protection applied after the surface has been properly prepared. The coating does not polish defects away by itself.

Why preparation comes first

A coating bonds over the finish that is already there. If the paint is hazy or heavily swirled, coating it does not magically remove those defects. That is why our ceramic package includes paint correction before the coating is installed.

The amount of correction should match the paint. Some vehicles only need an enhancement polish to restore gloss. Others need a more involved correction process to reduce visible defects.

What coating actually changes

A ceramic coating creates durable protection on the clear coat and can make routine washing and maintenance easier. It also helps preserve the refined finish underneath it.

What it does not do is make the vehicle scratch-proof or stop rock chips. Those are different problems, and overselling a coating as armor creates the wrong expectation.

The best coating is one you will maintain

A coated vehicle still needs washing. Gentle wash methods, clean towels and avoiding automatic brush washes help the finish stay in better condition.

If you are considering coating, the useful first step is an inspection of the paint. That tells us whether the car needs an enhancement polish or more correction before protection goes on.
